Earthenware Vessel with a Perforated Rim Unearthed at the Noshiro-Maehara Site (Local History Museum)

Pottery with perforated rims is a type of Jomon pottery found primarily in the Kanto region and Yamanashi Prefecture during the Middle Jomon period.This type of pottery derives its name from the small holes arranged at regular intervals below the flat spout (rim), along with the rim-like raised edge found in that area.

Although its exact purpose is unclear, it is thought that animal hide may have been stretched over the spout and that it was used as a drum or a container specifically for sake brewing.

On this occasion,the pottery with perforated rims unearthed at the Noshio-Maehara Site is larger than similar pottery found elsewhere in the city and features superior decoration. Given that it was painted red, it is presumed to have been used for special purposes rather than as an everyday item, making it a valuable resource for understanding the mindset of the people living in Kiyose during the Jōmon period.

Currently, the designated pottery with a perforated rim is on display in the museum’s exhibition hall.
